Bedford River Great Ouse Rowing Users Safety Protocol.
Listed below are a set of measures that
should help keep the number of 'incidents' involving crews to
a minimum. This protocol has been written jointly by the safety
officers of STAR and BEDFORD rowing clubs. It should
be read and applied in conjunction with the ARA Water Safety
Code and the map of the river showing bridges, danger
spots and turning points.
Note that alternative arrangements are put in place during regattas and heads: you should consult the instructions that are sent to clubs.
Please remember that local rules of
navigation apply and that all craft should proceed on the starboard
(right) side of the river. You have no priority over other craft
so always assume that they will NOT give way and you must.
- When passing up-stream through HITCHIN
BRIDGE take the starboard (Star Club) bank arch.
- When passing down-stream under COUNTY
BRIDGE always take the starboard (Bedford Rowing Club) bank
arch.
- When passing down-stream under TOWN
BRIDGE always take the second arch in from the Bedford Rowing Club
bank. Do not overtake immediately upstream of the Town
Bridge.
- Do not turn in front of crews that
have arrived before you at the turning points without first requesting
permission. Be aware that some crews, particularly singles and
novices, may turn at unexpected places on the river such as the
Suspension Bridge or Monkey Island. Additionally there may be
new novices in the bays at Bedford Rowing Club and Star Club.
- Always check it is safe to turn,
then turn as quickly as possible.
- Avoid sitting around in the turning
areas once you have turned.
- Be courteous to other rowers, river
users and members of the public.
- Safety considerations may mean that
you have to curtail a piece of work if the river is particularly
busy.
- Always make sure heel restraints
are in place, bow-bobbles are secure and any hatches are properly
closed. All coxes must wear a regulation life-jacket.
- Make sure that your boat is fitted
with bright lights facing to front (white) and rear (red)
when on the water at dusk or after dark. Lights should be steady,
not flashing. Green LED lights are not acceptable in place of white.
- Each crew is responsible for nominating
an individual who is responsible to their club captain/master in charge
and committee for the conduct and safety of their crew.
- However, all rowers and coxes are
responsible to themselves, their club and the public at large
for the overall safety of the river when they are using it.
FINALLY:
READ, FAMILIARISE and OBEY the ARA
WATER SAFETY CODE.
