BRC at the Head of the River Race, 17 March 2001

A freezing cold March morning, two intrepid eights from BRC take to the water

Fortunately, our vantage point at Barnes is about as far from racing as you can get and somewhat beyond the capabilities of my poor little digital camera. Never mind, you get the gist. Racing Senior 1 and starting at 88th, the first eight pass the Bandstand

...and make a move on Kingston RC ahead of them. Seconds later, Kingston (the cox obviously having taken 'London driving' lessons from our very own President) decide to relieve Andy Corner of his blade for a few strokes, but the recovery is swift and Kingston are soon dispatched

BRC President John Smith and Captain Dick Garrett watch procedings, adding their own special 'informed comment' as appropriate

The second eight - racing S2 - engage in a battle passing Barnes, cox Angela struggling to make herself heard sans cox-box

Ace-cox 'Bob' engages in text-warfare, having supplied the rest of the crew with chocolate brownies!

Club secretary Will Everitt is rooted to the spot in awe at the Club's success, whilst Martin Banham-Hall speedily sets to work on the de-rigging

Will is still dumb struck as the rest of the crew get stuck in

The second eight continue to dismantle their boat, working around the static secretary!

"I hope it's warmer than this at Veterans' Head tomorrow...". Paul Allen, stroke of the second eight, reflects on the day's racing

Dick retreats with the support gang to the warmth of a coffee bar, donning his Benny-hat and making friends with the locals!

John Smith - happy with a good morning's work

...and finally, the scene on the North Circular Road shortly after Smithy had driven home demonstrating his 'unique' driving style
