Comments: What a great website we have for ourselves!! All we need now is for a few more rowing wins and bits of gossip to really get it going. Come on girlies - lets really pull our fingers out this year and stack up the pots. Thanks to all who make this possible - for all you who do not know us at BRC - a lot of hard graft goes in to making this club what it is. Thanks.

Comments: I have been a member of the Lincoln Park Boat Club (LPBC) Sailing Group, Chicago, since June, 1982. I have been LPBC Commodore since January 1, 1994. In the Thomas Keller Library, River Rowing Museum, Henley-on-Thames, is a copy of my biography of William Buckingham "Father Bill" Curtis (WBC), the Chicagoan who founded the U.S. Rowing Association, August, 1872. I am honored to be a part of the 1999 British Museum of the Year. WBC's ancestor Richard Curtice, Topsham, Devon County, England, captained the Mary (Ann) Margaret, under commission of the Virginia Company. I would very much appreciate any assistance that might be rendered me, in researching the Mary (Ann) Margaret, which had been built around 1600. I am interested in all aspects of the vessel, such as dates and place of construction, voyages and masters. LPBC was organized August 30, 1853, as the Chicago Boat Club. It is the oldest continually-operating sports organization in Illinois. The current Boathouse was built in 1908, on the west shore of the Lincoln Park Lagoon, constructed 1889-1890.

Comments: Hi, I am a disabled rower looking for a local club. My current training routine is 12,000 meters per day on a Concept 2 indoor rower set at level 10, 30 miles per day stationary bike and wieghts three times per week (full body routine). In 1997 at the age of 26 I had Cancer in my hip and pelvis, the tumor destroyed the bones, I now only have a right hip and half a pelvis, despite this I am regaining my strength and am able to train quite hard. I would be gratefull of any help or encouragement.

Comments: Nice Homepage! I have a question: My brther Simon would like to spend some time (like 10 months) in England for a kind of studend exchange. He likes to stay with a boy who is like 16 or 17 years old , because he is 16 on July 19. The are more questions: is there any possibillity for him to row in your club and use the gym and ergo rooms, because he started rowing 1/2 year ago and is going on with it. He likes to spend the time from summer 2000 up to spring or summer '01, during this time he would like to go to school ( highschool - or like that). So if somebody would like to have a good friend for some months in your rowingclub and take him to school, it will be nice if he mails me privat (tobiasmaier@hotmail.com). Or if somebody else who likes to take care of him and will be a good host fammily for him is verry wellcome. Thank you p.s: telefax: Germany/0711/6491382

Just to add salt to the wound the BRC bar is currently serving Charlie Wells ' Jo Grimbleys' a superb, fruity and well bodied pint!! Also look out for 'Discovery' coming soon! Definitely reason enough to come home! Alex

Comments: Just browsing, In the early 1970's I was a member of the Bedford Ladies Rowing Club, one of the memorable and fun periods in my life, when I visit home I don't seem to be able to have enought time or I just don't know the schedule of events,to see any race's. But now I have found this website, I will be sure to brows it once in a while. I often think of my old trainers Olive and Ruth,(sorry to say I can't remember their surnames) and wonder where they are. I remember with a smile all the crews out on Sunday mornings,Fun days. Wishing you a winning 1999 Denise (Breed)Koch.

The rivalry between the clubs seems to be a healthy one that encourages all rowers to give off their best and thereby both clubs succeed. Just think what a combined Bedford crew might achieve! Comments: Hi Bedford Rowing Club, Learned to row in 1948 at BMS. Was no good however ! Later rowed for fun at St Ives, at Bristol RC, then at Port Marly (paris) in France, and at a new club Chateau Thierry on the Marne about 1975-78. --Soon discovered how NOT to ride the bow waves from the big barges to avoid sinking.STARTED a rowing club here at my home town (Carleton Place 50 km sw Ottawa) on the Canadian Mississippi, but it lasted only a few years through lack of interest - and hassle of finance, getting people to pay, balancing Ontario grants and living on waters edge for some years forced me to give it up.Had GREAT support from other rowing clubs, especially Ottawa, Kingston, Brockville and the Canadian Rowing Assoc. We had some great regattas with hundreds of competitors, and I still have local newspapers completely full of rowing photos. The river here is reminiscent of Bedford in that it is not too enormous, and not too fast flowing, with flat banks and willow trees. The competitors loved it. Maybe someone with more energy and resources than I, will reestablish the Mississippi Rowing Club. I still row when possible on my Aulden Shell, sometimes rowing upstream to minor rapids with my fly rod on board, catching a few bass for a couple of hours, then rowing back downstream - not quite Bedford. Today Monday am, 22 Dec 1997 (10 am) the temperaure is -17C and the unfrozen part of the river is steaming like a cauldron. Hardly rowing weather. I do not like the winter and started a new sport a few years ago. I took the "rowing machine" from the Aulden Shell, then screwed it to two very long skis. Then on skidoo tracks I rowed through the snow, using my oars to catch in the snow. It really needs two rowers on a longer pair, to keep moving efficiently, but has possibilities For a bit of fun also launched my shell on January 1st through launching ramp cut in ice, one year, and rowed up and down clear 1/2 mile (too fast/warm to freeze) for half an hour - never thought I'd be doing that in my fifties. This last three years (working in Bucharest then Toronto) I have been out less (season is really end May till October). The major achievement was towing my broken down 18 ft one ton boat from a rope attached betwen the foot rests. I would recommend it to anyone as weight training and also as instruction. The big boat tends to get to a constant velocity, and as you go down the slide, depending on the rate of change of speed, the boat catches you up to greater or lesser amount on the forward slide. It really illuminates lessons about not changing pace to rapidly when going forward on slide, 'cause if you go to fast it is bit like being run down by the Queen Mary. Could become a coaching tool. I rowed really hard for over an hour, and was just about dead (towing it 2 miles). Not bad for a 63 year old I thought. Still alive. It is Monday morning. Yesterday we had 9 lessons and carols in Anglican Church here (St James), at which my wife played organ (she learned at Bunyan Meeting from Jack Humberstone when she was at Bedford High School). Then we saw kids and grandchildren about an hour away in Quebec, then attended another such service at nearby Almonte at night, where a friend is playing for the last (an 45th !) carol concert as church organist. I am in the office this morning, but have got the Christmas spirit, and taken a rest from programming 911 stuff and GIS. About ten years sgo we were in Bedford and saw the head of the river from a cafe where the picture drome once stood. Times change. The weather was blustery, cold and raining, and all crews wore anoraks. I remember at BMS going rowing, after wading carefully through the floods, looking for edge of the river with our feet, with 8 over our heads, then in shorts and singlet, rowing in sleet. I can remember it now, melting on the skin of my shoulder. Not too often, but it did happen. I found you when looking for Woburn Parish Church - does anyoe know if they have a page ? Incidentally, several BMS old boys live around Toronto, and meet monthly for a pub dinner. I go when possible, but 5 hours drive away. Re BMS, where were THEY in the head of river results ????????? SOME WORDS ON ROWING Young men keep fit to row And old men row to keep fit Later men row to keep memories aglow When by the fireside they sit. (with apologies to Mr Frost and Christopher Fry) Happy Christmas

Oh, I also have rowed for 30+ years most of it very poorly. Smooth waters, RCO

Also, how about some photos of the captain, treasurers etc and some of the squads etc. Picture of the boathouse and the river etc. Just a thought. regards Jane

Comments: well as you can see i just surfed on in and found this while i was looking at the boat race results. How is everybody in your freezing cold dismal shithole. I am currently at uni wasting taxpayers money surfing the net. Yes it has reached to one of englands former colonies. A big G'Day to all at BRC from your antipodean friend. I can't promise i will be back soon although 2000 looks a realistic option. Anyone coming to Australia is welcome to look me up.
