BRC Press release: 3 March 1999

Our coxes are harder than yours!

After two rounds of the Cambridge Winter League, the composite crew from Bedford, Star and St Neots Rowing Clubs have a virtual stranglehold on the veteran B and C categories. The Winter League is a series of three races, held once a month, over the same course on the River Cam in Cambridge. The time for each race is cumulative, as in rallying and the composite crew have a lead of 9 seconds in veteran B and nearly 2 minutes in veteran C.

The B crew, which consists of Dave Edwards, Paul Allen, Gavin Smith, Pete Stasiuk, Chris Jeff, Chris Wisbech, Nigel Brewer, John Impey and cox Ian Darnel is only 7 seconds off the overall lead, and plan to make up that difference in the final race later this month. A simple substitution of Andy Lynn for Chris Jeff completes the line up for the veteran C crew.

Other recent results for Bedford Rowing Club include their two wins at the Worcester Head of the River Race. In Senior 1 eights, the crew of Gwyn Williams, Andy Macartney, Patrick Doyle, Mike Hardy, Mark Waddington, Andy Corner, Tom Robb, Blair Clow and cox Alison Faiers were clear winners of their division and third overall. Earlier in the day, the Senior 2 coxed four of Andy Corner, Gwyn Williams, Tom Robb, Steve Feord and cox Alison Faiers also won their category.

There were narrow defeats for Senior 1 coxed four and Womens Senior 3 eight, who incurred a ten second penalty for 'aggresive coxing', while the Mens Senior 4 eight battled hard against a strong headwind to secure a top ten place.
