Head of the Nene - Peterborough
Bedford Rowing Club sent a fleet of eleven boats to Peterborough to race the Head of the Nene, as the first major club outing of the season. Success came from all sections of the club, starting with the womens Novice coxed four of Clare Tyers, Sam Hall, Rachel Hunt, Wendy Rodenburg and cox Sara Reay who rowed confidently away from their opposition over the 2500m course.
A second win was collected by the Veteran B coxed four of Paul Knights, Huw Maltby, Steve Breed and Bill Sadler who renewed the perennial battle with their Peterborough rivals. These two crews swapped wins over the course of last season, and this year looks to have no let-up in the rivalry.
Illness and injury necessiatated a last minute change of crew, but it did not slow down the Bedford mens eight who were winners in the Senior I category. Three-quarters of the crew were actually eligible for veteran rowing, which shows the depth of talent in the area - a Bedford/Star/St Neots composite Veteran C crew and a Bedford Veteran D crew were also racing at the weekend.
Valentine's Day will see no thoughts of love in Bedford, as Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Clubs are sending their women's Boat Race crews to do battle in the Bedford Eights and Fours Head. The annual clash between the universities is held in a months time, but here is an opportunity for spectators to see the crews in action, and for local clubs to gauge their relative speeds. Racing starts at 10:30am and continues until 3:30pm, take a stroll down the Embankment and cheer the crews on.
