St Neots Regatta - Thanks again for the Victor Ludorum!

Bedford Rowing Club's Novice Mens Coxed four crew perfectly captured the spirit of summer rowing after winning their event at St Neots regatta this past weekend. The crew of Martin Banham-Hall, Willem van Beele, Simon Hargraves and Thomas Schoeller threw their cox Sarah Bernard into the river after the race. Next they threw their coach Dave Powell in and finally, they threw themselves in as well.

It was a busy and successful racing weekend for the club, which recorded nine wins and two other finals places. The hardest race series was that of Dave Edwards and Pete Stasuik who raced in Veteran B coxless pairs on Sunday. In the final against Peterborough RC, the two crews raced to a deadheat. A re-row immediately after was interrupted by a river cruiser, as the Bedford crew was leading approaching the finish line. The subsequent re-row had to be postponed while the two crews raced in other events. Finally, at the third attempt, the Bedford pair were beaten by one foot. Consolation came for the Bedford pair as they won the Veteran C/D Eights event in a composite crew with Star and St Neots.

Other wins for Bedford Rowing Club on Saturday were the Elite Eight who defended their title from last year. The crew of Gwynn Williams, Andy MacCartney, Al Ryder, Mike Hardy, Mike Tearle, Richard Hopkirk, Adam Wood, Dan Pounds and cox Nicky Star were an eclectic mix of new members and old friends.

The Elite coxed fours crew of Gwynn Williams, Andy MacCartney, Dan Pounds and Mike Hardy, with cox Nicky Star were also winners on Saturday. A crew change on Sunday did not slow them down, as Dan Pounds, Mike Hardy, Adam Wood, Patrick Doyle and cox Nicky Star took the honours by two feet from Peterborough..

Sculling wins were recorded by Richard Hopkirk in Senior I single sculls and Adam Wood and Spencer Nicolls in Senior III double sculls. Sculling with a new partner, Blaine Castle, Adam won the same event on Sunday.

The Veteran C coxless pair of Bill Sadler and Dave Powell came from behind to defeat Norwich for Bedford's final victory of the weekend.
