Womens Head
The 58th Women's Head of the River Race was held last Saturday, over the Boat Race course, from Chiswick Bridge to Putney, a distance of 4.25 miles. The tussle at the top was between two national squad based crews, one from Marlow and the other from Thames, while the local rivalry between Bedford Rowing Club and Star Rowing Club was equally intense. Both clubs entered the Senior II division, which contained thirty three boats, and Bedford finished fifth, 11 seconds ahead of Star RC.
The Bedford crew of Lydia Swift, Nicky Halse, Sarah Calderbank, Aine O'Connor, Ruth Easterbrook, Michele Emsley, Jo Barrel, Leslie Clinton and cox Imogen Bowis were the fastest non Tideway club in their division and the 47 of 245 crews to finish. Such a result is even more impressive when you condsider that it was the first row in this combination, as all the women had been unable to practice together before race day.
