Dream Team (nearly) Eclipsed!

The River Great Ouse saw some top class oarsmen competing in the third annual Bedford Eights and Fours Head at the weekend. Over 130 crews competed in 34 different race categories for the honour of being 'Head of the River'. The fastest crew of the day was the Leander/Star composite crew, containing four World Championship or Olympic standard oarsmen, who completed the course in a time of 5:47.

Bedford Rowing Club's first eight, consisting of Gwyn Williams, Steve Breed, Blaine Castle, Patric Doyle, Dan Pounds, Michael Hardy, Adam Wood, Jon Lemon and cox Imogen Bowis were winners of the Senior I eights event, only seven seconds behind the Star 'Dream Team' and six seconds ahead of their own clubs 'Dream Team'. A second event win for Bedford was the Veteran D eights crew of John Mingay, Brian Hall, Chris Barcock, Mike Liggit plus four members of Shoreham on Sea RC.

A fierce battle was fought in the smaller boat categories between two Bedford crews for the honour of the fastest four man crew. The winners of the Elite coxless fours, and the fastest four of the day were Gwyn Williams, Patric Doyle, Blaine Castle and Michael Hardy. Only a second behind, and winners of the Senior II quads event were Dan Pounds, Blair Clow, Adam Wood and Jon Lemon.
