Crash on the Nene, exclusive from our reporter on the scene
The Head of the Nene race in Peterborough saw two wins for Bedford RC crews and a disappointing crash for a third. The Veteran pair of Pete Stasiuk and Dave Edwards outclassed their opponents to win by 15 seconds, including the handicap time added to their even more veteran opponents from Nottingham and St. Ives rowing clubs. In the veteran B coxed fours event, the perinnial favourites of Paul Knights, Huw Maltby, Richard White and Bill Sadler proved too strong for their opposition from Peterborough and Cambridge '99 rowing clubs.
In the Senior I eights event, the Bedford first eight started as defending champions, and quickly made up ground on the crew in front of them. However, the slower crew did not make way for Bedford to overtake, resulting in a boat stopping crash. The Bedford crew were able to extricate themselves and continue rowing, however the lost time proved costly. Despite the crash, they finished ahead of one Star crew and and only 25 seconds behind the other. This weekend, Bedford will be aiming to restore pride by reversing that result.
