Bedford Goes Beserk in Viking York
Bedford Rowing Club journeyed north at the weekend to race on the River Ouse in York, rather than the more familiar waters of the River Great Ouse in Bedford. The change of scene did not dull the racing spirit of the men's squad however, as they stamped their authority on the York Small Boats Head. Bedford placed three boats in the top ten, more than any other single club.
The Elite coxed fours category was won by Stuart Storey, Blaine Castle, David Reid, Michael Hardy and cox Alison Birchby who finished 7th overall. Bedford sculler Caroline Kirman cruised to victory in Womens Novice Sculls, winning by a margin of over a minute.
Top placing for the club was the Elite coxless four of Gwyn Williams, Andy McLauglin, Patric Doyle and Adam Wood who were fifth out of 406 crews and second in their category. Other top finishers were the Elite coxless four of Stuart Storey, Blaine Castle, Jon Melrose and Michael Hardy who finished tenth overall. The Senior I coxed four, consisting of Dan Pounds, Patric Doyle, Mark Hammond, Jon Lemon and cox Blair Clow were second in their category while the Senior II coxed four of Gwyn Williams, Andy McLauglin, Patric Doyle, Adam Wood and cox Blair Clow were third. Encouragingly, Bedford had a crew finish higher than their traditional rivals from Agecroft Rowing Club in all boat categories.
