BRC Press release: 16th October 1997

New Flag, New Season

A touching gesture by outgoing captain, Ian Pendall, saw him donate a flag, complete with club colours and badge to the president. The old Bedford RC flag was stolen several years ago, (by person or persons officially unknown, though we have our suspicions, with more than one line of enquiry!) Its replacement is now flying resplendently over the clubhouse, which will play host to the Bedford Autumn Fours & Small Boats Head on Sunday 19th October. Over 250 crews, an increase in entries of over 10% on last year's event, will compete in six divisions over the 2000m course on the River Great Ouse, starting at 9:30 am and finishing at 4:30 pm.

Bedford RC will be aiming to repeat its strong showing at two races last weekend. At the Pairs Head of the River, over 2.5 miles of the Boat Race course, the best finish position was obtained by Blaine Castle and Stuart Storey, who finished second in the Senior One coxless pairs and 48 out 155 entries. In the Elite coxless pairs event, Michael Hardy and Gwyn Williams finished fourth and were 35th overall. Also racing were Adam Wood and Jon Lemon who finished eighth in the Senior Two double sculls category and 46th overall.

The Bedford RC veterans squad was up its winning ways in the St Neots Head of the River race. The veteran crew of Paul Knights, Hugh Maltby, Richard White and Bill Sadler won in Elite coxless fours and finished second overall. In Veteran B coxless fours, two Bedford oarsmen, Pete Stasiuk and Dave Edwards teamed up with two members of Star RC to win their event and finish fourth overall.

All these crews will be racing today and aim to make it two winning weekends in a row!
