Captain’s report March 2016

Firstly I would like to send our best wishes from all of Bedford Rowing Club to John the bar steward and wish him a speedy recovery.

Mid February saw the Bedford  4s & 8s head with a good entry of 13 crews racing at all levels. The junior girls raced at IM3 and had a convincing win. The senior men also had 2 races and won both. Although there were no other wins, the club had some good strong rows against very good opposition. We also had good support from the rowers with marshalling duties which helps the whole day to be a great success. Thanks to Lydia for all of the hard work you and your team put into making the day a big money earner for the club.

On the same day as the head we had the vet C 4+ competing at Cambridge Winter League. They put in another good time and after their last leg which was on the 6th March they came 63rd out of 170 crews. Well done boys.

At Nottingham head of the Trent on the 28th of Feb we had 5 crews racing. We put out some good times in unfamiliar conditions, which was disappointing to the crews, but good times were achieved nonetheless.

On 5th March the women’s squad took an 8 to WHORR – for many this was their first experience of the tideway -  and were pleased to find themselves mid field, only being beaten by some very experienced crews. Well done ladies.

This month there have been no written reports of damage, which should be a positive thing however, the Wintech double was discovered to have a badly damaged stern, probably incurred by having been dropped. Lynda reported the damage when she was intending to use the boat.

As the days get longer, hopefully all crews will be able to enjoy more time on the water, but to be more mindful that the river is bound to become more busy. River safety must be a high priority for all. All and any incidents involving club boats must be reported.

Last session at the Girls’ School is Monday 21st March, but sessions will continue on the Embankment near the club as the lighter evenings reach us. The £2 cost will still be charged as this will continue to help boost club funds and purchase gym equipment.

Social Events

John organised the annual pie night on Friday 4th which was well attended and given that this was the day following his heart attack, the bar staff coped admirably. A few members also helped serve food and drink and clear away.
