Explore Rowing

Explore Rowing is an exciting new project in conjunction with British Rowing that is focused on participation and allowing an access point into our sport for all ages & fitness types.

Our Explore Rowing courses usually run for 6 weeks and costs around £85 for the full course.  For details of upcoming courses, please email explorerowing@bedfordrowing.co.uk

With our new stable boats you will can have the opportunity to try rowing in a safe environment so we can teach you the basics before letting you out in our range of racing boats.

The choice of clothing you wear is governed very much by the weather conditions. Here are a few general rules that should help you decide what clothing to bring with you.

  • Always bring a change of clothes when you first start rowing as you may get wet!
  • Too much clothing is better than too little
  • Many thin layers work better than a few thick ones
  • Trainers with a supportive sole are required for any of the gym or running sessions.
  • When you are in the boats you normally take your shoes off so for rowing sessions shoes that are soft and you don’t care too much about are best.
  • In the summer months, shorts, T shirts will usually suffice. Remember your suncream too!

If you decide to take up rowing or you wish to compete for the club, you can purchase a range of rowing kit from the club.

Age & Fitness

Rowing is a sport that can be experienced by people of all ages. At Bedford Rowing Club we are able to accept rowers from academic Year 9 upwards (age 13+). All ages, shapes and athletic abilities are welcomed and catered for at Bedford Rowing Club. Rowing by its nature is a physical sport and as such you should be in reasonable physical health. If in doubt please contact your doctor before starting any new physical activity.

As with all sports there is an element of risk associated with rowing. Your safety is our prime concern and there is an ongoing program to maintain and improve safety standards. In the interest of safety we are unable to let you row unless you are in general good health and can swim at least 100m in light clothing. If you have and questions or issues about safety at Bedford Rowing Club. Please contact our safety advisor.

Explore Rowing Launch 2012

Bedford RC hosted a double celebration at the weekend, launching its Explore Rowing programme and receiving a Sport England Inspired Facilities cheque at a ceremony on Sunday.

The club has received six stable Explore Rowing boats, which will allow novices and casual rowers alike to enjoy a more leisurely row along the River Great Ouse.

The new fleet includes two quadruple sculls, two doubles, and two singles, and four members of Championship Rugby side Bedford Blues were among the first to give the new boats a spin on Sunday afternoon.

The Bedford Blues quartet were joined by a number of local dignitaries and officials, as Bedford RC named each of their new boats after celebrated explorers.

British Rowing Chairman Di Ellis was on hand to name Raleigh - one of the Explore Rowing quads - with local councillors Caroline Fensome and Apu Bagchi, Sport England’s Mark Omerod, Harpur Trust CEO David Russell, and Bedford MP Richard Fuller each naming one boat apiece.

After the boat-naming, Mark Ormerod handed over a cheque worth over £32,000 from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund – which has been granted in order for the club to upgrade their clubhouse and improve their adaptive rowing facilities.

We are delighted to secure the first Inspired Facilities grant,’ said Bedford RC Chairman Mike Perry. ‘It will enable us to upgrade the quality of our premises to match the quality of our coaches, and provide suitable facilities for any disabled members of the community who wish to Explore Rowing. It is the cornerstone of our strategy to have an outstanding club for the 2012 Olympics’ legacy.’
