In 1997, Bedford Quarts Sprint Regatta parted company with the Bedford Amateur Regatta # (organised by the Bedford Regatta Committee, not the club) and returned to its traditional slot in July - the weekend between Henley and the Nationals. The same format is retained this year, both events are one-day regattas reflecting their different seasonal markets. Whilst both regattas are, of course, open to entries from all clubs and statuses, the May Regatta over 1000m has for the last four years been held for eights and fours only, with a 'plate' event for first round losers in events with large entries. It has become a popular regatta, particularly amongst schools and colleges.
The July Sprint event is open to all boat types and statuses over 600m, with the infamous massive quart pewter tankards as prizes. The Quarts Sprint is seen by some as a useful sharpener and last-minute tweaker before the Nationals, by others as an eagerly anticipated chance to get some decent silverware into the trophy cabinet before the tinpot regatta season starts, and is especially popular amongst club crews and veterans. A couple of other little events are chucked in for good measure by another place, you'll have to ask them directly about those.
