Captain’s report April 2016

Events

We started the month with Bedford small boats head, which is always a successful event for Bedford and as a club had the biggest number of entries to date and had several wins too. Despite the number of competitors, the event was well staffed by volunteers and therefore made the whole day a great success.

Bedford Amateur Regatta (held on Saturday 7th May) was a resounding success and BRC entered 3 boats, 2 of which were beaten in the final but congratulations to the Senior Mens’ VIII who won. The rowers ran a very successful cake and coffee stand bringing in nearly £1000 and the social side also ran the bar in the marquee which is also bound to have made a healthy profit, judging by the amount of Pimm’s that was sold!

We also lent South African School’s two 8’s. They commented on how much they enjoyed the day and how welcoming BRC had been to them. They also thought we were very lucky to have a great stretch of river to practice on and also be so close to a town.

Boats

On the whole, the fleet is being well maintained although this summer we will be looking to replace at least 4 pairs of shoes in the womens’ boats and maybe the rehandling of some blades.

As the days are longer, more crews are able to enjoy more time on the water, but must be mindful that the river is becoming increasingly busy. River safety must be a high priority for all. All and any incidents involving club boats must be reported.

Circuits

Owing to poor attendance of the outdoor circuit sessions, these have now ceased until further notice.

Club news

Lynda Higgins and myself met with a visually impaired group who would like to start using the club, mainly on Wednesdays. Please can we raise our awareness for the need to have a tidy environment – no clothes left thrown on the changing room floors etc (we do seem to be amassing a fair amount of ‘lost property’)

Sculling School

Matt Farley has offered to start running a sculling school for any member to take part in. The sessions will run on Saturdays at 9.30am and Wednesdays at 7pm.
