Captain’s report September 2016

Events

We started the month with the Peterborough 2 day regatta with a good level of entries and a win for Matt Farley in his single and we also had Master Kavanagh who won his heat but lost out in the final of the J18A sculls. Ana Shreeves and Maria Benbow won their heats, but were pipped to the post in the final of the Womens 2x.  Jamie Rogers and Ana Shreeves came second in the rep of the mixed 2x.

August was designated a coaching free month, with many individuals continuing with their own training regimes, however many coaches still put in some time to help their crews prepare for events in August.

On 3rd September it was the boathouse clean out when all the boats were given a good clean and those racing were trailered in readiness for the Denver-Ely marathon. Martin Fraser also went through all of the ergos and has prepared a comprehensive list of bits repaired and parts needed.

St Neots RC have borrowed 1 Explore quad, 2 doubles and 4 singles for their ‘Olympic taster day’ where they have managed to sign up 15 new members and have extended their thanks and gratitude to BRC for lending the boats.

On 4th September it was the Great Ouse Marathon (Denver to Ely). We took 15 of our own boats (record entry for our club) and also we helped MKRC by taking 2 of their boats, resulting in a very full trailer but everyone worked together, loading and unloading, so much so that we almost looked as though we knew what we were doing! Again I have had an email from MK Captain thanking us for all the help we have given them and also during the day. The Rec rowers have also extended their thanks to the rest of the club for all the help they received during the event.

Boats

We have a bought a new Swift 2x (previously on demo from Dom Vincent). This is a 55 – 75k boat which will be predominantly a women’s (or lightweight men’s) 2x or 2-.

We have also bought a refurbished Janousek 2x/2- this is an 85k boat which has already raced at the GO Marathon.

The Wintech 2x (purchased >2 years ago)  has now been named after Mike Harris (butcher) and Dave Catlin (farmer) and will be known as ‘Meat & Veg’.

The booking out notice board which is in the 8s bay is now being used well by rowers wishing to secure boats for certain sessions. If you are unsure of how to use it, please speak to me or your coach. No bookings more than 6 days ahead.

We will soon be starting a rolling programme with PC boat repairs to have some of the fleet fully refurbished but at this point I would like to thank John the boatman for all that he has done and continues to do to keep our fleet afloat.

Club news

We are currently in talks with local business ‘Tribe’ with a view to forming a partnership to totally refurbish the gym. This would entail a large investment by them and in return they would receive access to our gym.
