Captain’s report October 2015

Events: -

Boston Marathon – Sara Reay entered a Sheffield Bedford composite Women’s Masters E  4x- achieving a time of 4:06:02 and was the fastest women’s crew on the water that day. Well done to Sara.

Bedford 4s and small boats head – 11th October we had a great Bedford entry, totalling 31 crews, some being time only and having great wins for the juniors, seniors and Masters across the board. We had a great turnout of Bedford volunteers adding to the success and smooth running of the event. A big thank you to all the organisers, marshalls, monitors etc.

Boat house clean up Saturday 26th September – A great turn out from members to take part and help clean the boathouse, boats and equipment. Many of those unable to make it on the day either came earlier or pledged to do specific tasks at a later date. There was a great spirit and everyone mucked in together.  Special thanks to Sue Heijl’s (Explore+ group) husband who supplied cleaning products, cloths, mops and buckets for the day. On the same day, we hosted a Macmillan coffee morning and cake sale – record numbers of cake donations and monies raised – this year the total was £314.40. Thanks to Gabi and John  for organising.

Gym re-organisation The gym has been reorganised by Martin Fraser, our new safety officer, and with the help of Rocky, information has been posted around the gym to help ensure that safe practice is observed.

Spinning classes – Cathy Johnson is now running early morning spin classes in the gym at 6.30am for anyone wishing to join in. Cathy to be contacted for schedule.

Monday night circuit training – Sessions run by Andy Darnell have now started up back in the gym at BGS on Monday nights. The cost is £2, to cover the hall hire which is £50 for the hour. 25 members are required to attend so that the club does not have to subsidise the hire cost. All are welcome, including non members.

Council funding – The council has provided funding for 3 sets of blades and we have also purchased one additional set, so we now have a new set for one of the Explore Rowing quads.

Annual dinner – Saturday 3rd October at the Swan Hotel. Good attendance by current and past members and a good night was had by all. The raffle raised £523.50 and the silent auction raised £735.

Awards evening - It has been decided that the awards normally presented at the annual dinner will now be presented on a specific awards presentation evening in the clubhouse on Friday 27th November at 7pm. John has agreed to provide a finger buffet. Numbers to be agreed with him 2 weeks prior to the event. Every member is encouraged to attend and support.  Any suggestions for some new awards that could be introduced, please let me know. Posters will be produced and put up in the club and coaches will be asked for nominations.

New boat – at the beginning of the month we took delivery of a new boat to the fleet, named by me as ‘Gabi Thomas’. This is a stern coxed four, particularly suitable for the transition from stable to fine boats, well suited to the Explore and novice squads. This was purchased by myself at no cost to the club, therefore I named it after my lovely wife!

Shortage of equipment- now that the club is growing so rapidly, it has been highlighted that we do not have enough serviceable equipment to fulfil requirements. Last Thursday being a case in point; we had 8 x 4s and 1 x 8 as well as a few single scullers out on the river at one time. We are short of cox boxes and need to remind any coxes using equipment that they use the log to sign in and out , to report any problems with the boxes and put the cox boxes back on charge.

New Committee members- Following last month’s AGM, I would like to welcome the new committee members; Liz Redman (Social Chairman), Gavin Dods (Secretary) Claudia O’Connell (takes up the post of Membership secretary) Martin Fraser (safety officer), Lisa Bassett (Welfare Officer), and of course a warm welcome to the new President John Mingay.
