Passing of John Bell

The Club is saddened to learn of the passing of John Bell on Monday 4 February.

John - a past club member, veteran rower and sculler for the Club - was a former
deputy headmaster of Mark Rutherford School and enthusiastic Chairman of the
Bedfordshire Schools Rowing Association in its early years securing funding for a
number of boats, some of which remain in our junior bay to this day.
He did much to establish state school rowing in Bedford.  As Master in Charge and coach of
Mark Rutherford School Rowing Club, he was instrumental in ensuring that the school club punched well above its weight for its size, with honours at numerous National events and representation at International regattas.

After leaving Bedford in 1990 to take up a headship in Wales, John followed an interesting teaching career in Botswana and China before returning to his roots in the north east. He lived in Durham in retirement, first working for a year or two as rowing master at
Durham School and then becoming involved in junior coaching as
Durham Amateur Rowing Club's community sports coach.

His contribution to the sport was recognised by the (then) Amateur Rowing Association with its Coach of the Year Award in 2006 and a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal by British Rowing last year.

The Club sends its condolences to John’s wife Susan and his three sons.
