Captain’s report May 2017

April saw the Bedford fours and small boats head with a win for our 4- and novice 2x and the WNov 1x. Well done to all.

We had 2 Vet 4s going to Evesham with a win at VetD. Well done chaps. The other 4 narrowly missed out. Well done to all.

Also we have just had Bedford Amateur Regatta where sadly we only had one entry because there was not enough competition for the 4- category. BRC had a great volunteer turnout from club members to help both in the marquee and at marshalling etc at the event. We have just received £1200 for the efforts we put in at last year’s regatta. Special thanks to all the juniors who turned up to be runners , taking information from one end of the course to the other. The bar and cake stall and refreshments sadly won’t do as well as last year, mainly being due t the poor weather. Ig thanks to Jayne, Liz and their teams for all their help during the day. Thanks also to jayne Smith, Laura Henman, Freya Parry and Sara Reay who helped me to move the fridges, beer barrels, wines etc along with all the consumables for the refreshment stall and bar back to the club that evening so that we were totally cleared up by the end of the day.

We have taken delivery of the new Filippi and we are now awaiting the new sculling riggers for ‘Gabi Thomas’ which have been promised within the next 2-3 weeks. We have also had delivery of a set of new Concept 2 quad blades to help ease the demand on equipment, as although we have over 40 sets, we were actually running out on some occasions.

Club News

Tribe’s treatment room is now finished and they and Martin Fraser are offering full treatments of which the club takes a percentage of their income.

By now all of the outside of the club has been painted as well as the inside stairwell, long room and crew room, which is now a lot tidier and the cox boxes behind a secondary door.

We have also named the ergo room ‘The Bright Room’ after a substantial outlay from Rocky Bright many years ago, to initially refurbish a room to make it suitable for ergos.

Lynda Elliot has appointed Holly Williams as the Junior Captain who has taken the role on with great enthusiasm and has really started to get the juniors motivated. The Junior squad is increasing every week, with us having 17 on the water at the last outing. Because of this, Lynda is thinking to increase their time on the water to include a Wednesday. Great effort from both Lynda and Holly.

I have also submitted a grant application Sport England for funding for a pontoon to go out of the front of the club to assist launching and landing our boats especially when the water level is low as it is now. I have also committed us to the Workplace Challenge scheme which will culminate in a regatta being held on July 9th for all the teams involved. BRC will host a BBQ at the club.

There is to be a Work Party on Saturday 20th May to stain the chairs and tables  that now stand on the balcony, starting at 10.30a.m. Any volunteers would be greatly appreciated.
