Captain’s report June 2016
We had Nottingham Masters and Nottingham Regatta events in May. The club had a good representation across the board with wins for Dave Catlin & Mike Harris in their double scull, and Mike Harris and Sara Reay both won in their single scull events. Matt Farley won his heat to go through to the final where he finished a worthy third. Lydia Swift and Clare Middletone (Eason) also competed in their singles.
Milton Keynes hosted an Explore/Primary regatta which was well attended by BRC’s Explore+ group. All boats were crewed by mixed club crews, so no actual club wins, but every one of our rowers was in a winning boat in one race or another. After experiencing the MK invitational event, it has been decided to run an invitational Explore only regatta in conjunction with Star club, to be held on Saturday 9th July 2pm – 6pm. All are welcome to support and enjoy the bar. We also intend to run a BBQ, hopefully in glorious sunshine. The decision by the Events committee to not run the Sprint Regatta this year has given us the opportunity to try something new.
4th & 5th June saw the senior Men’s 8 going to Met Regatta at Dorney Lake where on Saturday where they had an unfortunate draw, but gained some good qualifying points for Henley. On the Sunday, they had a very good time trial, putting them in good stead for the following heat, where they were looking to be the fastest boat. However, a seat breaking during the race severely hampered their time and they drew a bad lane for their final, but put in a good time again helping them to pre-qualify for Henley. The rest of the club went to Peterborough Regatta on both days where 6 crews on Saturday and 15 crews were entered on Sunday. Some great racing, with wins to Juniors Emily & Emma in a 2x , Charlie & Hannah also in a 2x. We also had wins for Sara Reay in the Bedford/Sheffield composite and to Mike Harris in the M4. A really great effort from the junior boys just being pipped at the post. The Euro M4+ won their heat and unfortunately came 3rd in their semi-final. Had they been in a different semi, they would have won, looking at their times. Sadly this was the same story for the WMasC4+ who were against the 2 winning boats in their heat and so did not make the final, but they are in good spirits and ready for National Masters next week. The Vet Cs & Ds were straight finals but came second in both events. Being outclassed by better crews.
New adjustable shoes have been ordered for both the men’s and women’s boats. I have also ordered some additional tubular nuts for the footplates. Any boat having wing nuts by the heel restraint, please be sure to replace with the new tubular design. This will prevent further damage to the shoes.
Alison Dee is now back in use and is currently configured as a W4+ for training sessions.
On Saturday 21st Radio 4 came to BRC to record a programme discussing Britex with myself and made several soundbites from several members there. On the Sunday we also had a film crew creating several short rowing-related stories which will go out after this year’s Olympics, on a specially dedicated Olympics channel. A bit thank you to Jamie, Matt, Mike, Sam (and the coxing skills of Jacob) and also the very newly acquired sculling skills of Nathaniel. Also big thanks Andy for driving the launch so that some great on-the-water footage could be taken.
Matt Farley has been running a very successful sculling school for any member to take part in. These have proved to be highly entertaining (for spectators) and popular with all rowers, giving great confidence to all rowers, myself included, never believing that it would be possible to stand up, turn around and sit down whilst balancing a fine single. And remain dry. Matt to publish when these sessions are to run.
