Captain’s report July 2016

Events

June 11th saw the Masters national Championship, held at Nottingham. Sadly owing to illness, Dave Catlin’s crew had to withdraw but the women’s Master C4+ (Pointing, C O’Connell, Goymer, Johnson + E O’Connell) achieved  a very worthy silver silver and against strong competition, Sara Reay’s 4X- composite Bedford/Sheffield crew won bronze.

On the same day, we attended Star Regatta. A small number of crews entered and the only win was by Junior squad member Ollie Lee in the 1X NOV.

The following weekend, 18th, the Senior mens’ squad raced at Marlow, where they raced at Elite level and although they were outrowed, they still held their own in a very high standard of rowing.

Also on 18th, twelve of the Explore+ squad competed in the Broxbourne ‘Splash & Dash’ and had a number of wins across the board in composite crewed boats.

Yet another event on 18th, was at St Ives where the Womens Master C4+ lost their Novice status, as did the Junior girls, Emily & Emma in the W Nov2X.

The following Friday saw the senior men trying to secure a place for Henley. To do so they needed to achieve a ranking of being in the top 13 boats (out of 36). Unfortunately, they managed 20th place which is a great achievement for such a young crew and has given them a fantastic and useful experience to work from for next year. Well done boys and coach Andy.

Saturday 9th July saw Henley Masters with wins for Sara Reay in her single and White, Catlin, Harris and Sadler in their 4-. What a great results for them personally and what fantastic ambassadors for the club. Simon Clark from Star has sent his congratulations to our winning rowers.

Also on 9th we had our own Explore invitational regatta, which was well attended by our own rowers and new rowers from MK and St Neots. The recreational rowers also participated and had a fabulous day’s racing, pretty much winning every event! Feedback from the visiting clubs has been complementary and positive and hopefully will be worth running as a regular event in future. This event was run almost exclusively by the Explore+ coaching team with help from non Explore club members as well as friends and family. It was a great social event.

Boats

New adjustable shoes have been received for both the men’s and women’s boats. As we have an increased membership, we are looking to purchase new boats. Currently we are considering 2 Womens’ doubles. If anyone has any further suggestions, please discuss with the new captain.

We have taken delivery of 2 cox boxes paid for by Bedford Borough Council which proved to be a great asset in the Explore regatta.

Club news

On 13th July, the SGM will be held for the election of this year’s captain. Within the meeting there will be important announcements regarding the forward arrangement of squads following the major influx of rowers during the past year.

Sculling School

Matt Farley has been running a very successful sculling school for any member to take part in and is now being overwhelmed rowers wishing to join in. If anyone is available to help Matt with these sessions, please let him know.

Forthcoming events

23rd & 24th July – St Neots Regatta

13th & 14th August – Peterborough Regatta

4th September  Great Ouse Marathon (Denver – Ely)

18th September Boston Marathon
