Captain’s report January 2016

I’d like to wish everybody a Happy New Year and hopefully the club will continue growing and going from strength to strength in the coming year. It is great to see so many new, old and returning members being present at the club.

Events

Although we did not enter any events in December, we have got 18 crews entered into the forthcoming Star Head on 17th January. We hope that all entries will be accepted.

Social Events

December saw good turnouts for the Christmas draw and New Year’s Eve and there was a fantastic turnout for Boxing Day 8s with 32 rowers being randomly crewed into 4 mixed 8s; the winners receiving medals and their names are to be engraved onto the Mike Perry trophy.

Capsize drill

The safety officer has arranged for a capsize drill to be held on Sunday 10th January at 1pm at Bedford Girls School. This is a compulsory test for all rowers who have not previously done one and is a British Rowing stipulation for any rower wishing to compete.

Adverse weather conditions

Can I remind rowers that when the cautionary rowing signs are displayed, or when the weather has taken a turn for the worse, you must contact me or the safety officer (Martin Fraser) to get permission to row. In my absence, or in the event that neither Martin nor I is contactable, I am happy for qualified coaches to make the decision. Any crews taking it upon themselves to ignore this condition may find themselves suspended from rowing. My number is 07887667788

We do not want to stop rowers from rowing, but occasionally we have to restrict rowers due to safety implications.
