Bedford’s Masters four achieved a long-time held ambition to win at Henley Masters Regatta last week.
The crew of Shirl Musselle, Chris Wisbey, Alastair Forsythe and Ian Darnell won the G coxless fours (average age 65) against some very strong opposition.
In the semi final the opposition was a Minerva Bath composite (which included 2 former Olympians). After a tense race with never more than half a length between the crews, Bedford won by a canvas.
Another composite crew, Upper Thames & Reading , stood between Bedford and a medal. After a blistering start, taking half a length lead in the first 20 strokes, Bedford gradually increased their lead to win by 1 ¼ lengths.
Not bad for some ‘hicks from the sticks’ as someone in the Minerva crew mentioned earlier in the day.
