Bedford’s Rowing Is on the Up!

Bedford Rowing Club, which has been supported by Sport England’s ‘Inspired Facilities’ funding, is the organiser of the most successful series of rowing events throughout the year, organising four different races annually which attract entries from rowing clubs from the length and breadth of the country.

On Sunday 10th February at the Bedford Eights and Fours Head, one of the only races to take place nationally with large numbers of events being cancelled due to adverse stream conditions,

Bedford’s crews had their first major race since the Christmas break. At the Club the community atmosphere was at an all time high with all squads feeling very positive. The Men’s squad were able to christen their new eight, purchased with sponsorship money from SM Davies Auto Technical Services and Royle Flush and matched with Sport England’s ‘Sportsmatch’ funding, with an encouraging win in IM2 eights beating Broxbourne and one of the Cambridge colleges. Men’s head coach, Alan Clarke, said “I am pleased with the win but there is still a lot more potential speed to come out of the eight. Our main aim for the winter is the Men’s Head of the River race in London next month where there will be over 400 crews racing from across the country. Bedford have made a big investment in the Men’s squad to grow and sustain a new group of rowers for this and future years and this event will give us a good measure of how far we have come this season”.

The Women’s section of the Club was able to hold its heads high with a pleasing win in Novice fours. One of the crew, who only started rowing last April on a women only ‘Learn to Row’ course said “Although half way through the race I thought ‘What am I doing!’, winning my first pot has made my year and I look forward to winning many more”.  The crew is now looking forward to their next race and hope to continue the winning streak.

Our Veteran G coxed four also took first place with a win over local rivals Star Club by 17 seconds. The crew will put rivalry aside and will team up with Star to race in the National Veterans Head of the River race in London this March.
