Captain’s report April 2016

This month’s report is brief, on account of the fact that not much has happened. Worthy of note is the increased number of rowers in the club and on the water, with an impressive number of home crew entries for the upcoming head.

This month saw the senior men competing at HORR on 19th, finishing 108th out of 300+ entries. This event gets more competitive each year, with world class crews competing. A very good result, in fact the best for many years – well done boys.

At the same event, we also entered a ‘B’ boat – the first time in several years that a second boat from the club has participated. This was the first time that many of the crew had endured a race of this length and class and it proved to be a testing challenge but one that has provided an experience to build on.

Happily since last month’s report we have had no incidents of loosened riggers, broken or malfunctioning equipment and crews have been more vigilant in checking boats prior to their outings.

Can I remind crews that now we are approaching regatta season, boats will be officially checked for heel restraints being no longer than 7cm.

Evening rowing

Can I remind all crews boating in the evenings to ensure that they have lights on their boats. Although the nights are lighter, the dark closes in quickly.

The last session at BGS was held the last Monday before Easter with a very disappointing turn out by rowers – the majority of those present were not club members.

Andy Darnell has kindly agreed to continue running an outdoor circuit session on the embankment near the club on Mondays at the new time of 7pm. These sessions are again open to all and the £2 charge will still apply and go directly to the boat fund.
